Innovation, Experience, and Community in London, Ontario

Nestled along the Thames River in the heart of London, Ontario, Western University is one of Ontario’s largest post-secondary institutions. In fact, it’s a highly respected campus located in the “Forest City,” known for its academic excellence and vibrant community. With a student population exceeding 42,000 and a global alumni network of more than 372,000, Western offers a truly international and interdisciplinary academic experience.

Undergraduate students can choose from over 400 majors, minors, and specializations, while a thriving campus life includes more than 200 student-run clubs. The university is home to renowned research hubs like the Institute for Neuroscience and the Institute for Earth and Space Exploration, where undergraduates can participate in summer internships and collaborate directly with faculty mentors.

Western emphasizes real-world experience through a range of hands-on learning options—including study abroad, entrepreneurial initiatives, project-based courses, and work-integrated learning. “In today’s competitive job market, employers are looking for graduates with real-world experience and entrepreneurial skills such as problem-solving and innovative thinking,” says president Alan Shepard. “Western’s programs combine hands-on learning with entrepreneurship opportunities across all faculties.”

One standout example is the John M. Thompson Centre for Engineering Leadership and Innovation, where students prototype ideas and launch startups. In 2024, Western unveiled the Ronald D. Schmeichel Building for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, featuring a cutting-edge maker space to further support student ventures. The Wampum Learning Lodge, opened in 2022, offers a welcoming space and support network for Indigenous students, while also serving as a bridge between the university and Indigenous communities. That same year, Thames Hall was renovated to serve as the central hub for student health and wellness services.
